Cabaret Voltaire

In light of the tragic times the world is going through, with a war in Europe and many others scattered around the world, the show is not only a tribute to the DADA movement, which gave rise to several other important movements in art history, but also focuses on the women artists of this movement. Here we are still in a safe place, where freedom and creativity exalt art as a cure for the wounds caused by the structural destabilization of a society that is more global than ever.

Here we recreate a refuge for those fleeing war as a place of creative effervescence, with art as salvation as its motto.

what the festival has to say

The company brings a newly premiered project to this Festival.

The title is a place where people met to discuss art above all else, and there, among people who met to escape the harsh reality of war that surrounded them, an artistic movement began to emerge that would transform the language of Europe, the language of an era.

The Dadaist movement was born, where men and many women worth discovering tore apart artistic concepts that would change the way art itself was viewed.

S.A.Marionetas – Teatro & Bonecos

A professional puppet theater creation structure made up of authors, builders and puppeteers who have been producing originals in Portuguese with the aim of promoting and disseminating puppet theater since 1997. From this perspective, their work involves research and the search for new aesthetic solutions, as well as the preservation of Portuguese popular tradition through research and continuity in the realization of Teatro D. Roberto. In both cases, it favors traveling shows as the best way to spread the art of puppetry.

Since 1998, the company has organized the Puppet Theatre Festival “Marionetas na Cidade” in Alcobaça, where it is based. Since 2015, the festival has been awarded the “EFFE Label”. He has taken part in festivals in Portugal and represented the country in Spain, Germany, France, Belgium, the UK, Italy, the Czech Republic, China, Slovakia, Macau, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, South Korea, Angola, Tunisia, Turkey, São Tomé, Austria, Iran, Thailand, Russia, Timor, the USA, Brazil, etc. Since 1997 he has created 57 original productions with more than 2,800 performances. In 2005 he was awarded the “Troféu Afonso Lopes Vieira” prize for cultural merit in the arts and entertainment. He has received 15 international and national awards and several nominations and commendations for his work. He has produced and co-produced operas, ballets, theater, cinema and television, always with puppets.

that's how

What a pleasant evening it was to enjoy this show by the Alcobaça-based company, S.A.Marionetas. A unique proposal, very well received by the audience, in addition to the satire and knowledge they bring to this theatrical creation about an artistic movement we call Dadaism, which, through a pictorial universe of objects and unusual sounds, transported us to a dimension and an era that deserve serious reflection.

In a game of objects, perspectives, and texts, we discover how important this movement was in breaking with a set of pre-established rules, tearing down norms that launched not only the art of puppetry as an element of value in the theatrical dimension, but also the valorization of women artists, in addition to a broad proposal that certainly still breaks with many of the norms that sometimes sacralize the stage.

It was very interesting to see throughout the show how the puppets, with their profound symbolism, interact with the audience and to observe how sound plasticity can mix sound and the manipulation of objects live.

It was undoubtedly a very successful venture by this company, which we have followed since the birth of Teatro e Marionetas de Mandrágora. An artistic team that has developed countless distinctive proposals, both in terms of valuing the traditional heritage of puppet theater, Teatro Dom Roberto, as well as investing in different scales, dimensions, and platforms.

It was undoubtedly a pleasant evening, which left us very satisfied and where the younger audience left saying that they had seen a show that introduced them to the world of Dadaism, which they did not know existed, and thus different functions of artistic creation are placed on the same level. For Ei! Marionetas, it is always very important to showcase the diverse and unconventional work that puppet theater companies are developing across the country, which can be seen at this event as a diverse range of colors and languages.
