Maria Liberdade finds herself trapped in the long arms of a sinister figure who, by analogy with the Castle of Ghosts from the traditional repertoire of Roberto theatre, is guarded by diabolical characters representing the powers and fears that sustain the dictatorship—symbolised by the werewolf, the big-headed man, the witch and the devil. Clown Roberto begins the show to the sound of the barrel organ, but is repeatedly interrupted by Maria’s cries for help. In the end, as in all plays from the traditional repertoire, the hero is the invincible Roberto, who defies laws, conventions and fears and manages to free Maria Liberdade, ending up dancing with her to the sound of the MFA Anthem.
In this show, the characters retain the characteristics and simplicity that define the ‘robertos’—glove puppets manipulated by a single puppeteer who uses a mouthpiece to create the characters’ voices—but, in this case, he is accompanied by a musician who complements the narrative with his voice and guitar.

Trulé – Research into Animated Forms made its debut at the 1st BIME in 1987 with a show by Robertos, and over the last 20 years has toured 24 countries, taking part in over 80 international festivals and winning 18 awards. Trulé, a professional project, aims to promote puppetry both through the staging of shows and through training initiatives.
