Maria Liberdade

Maria is trapped within the Dictatorship. The long arms of a sinister figure hold her fast in the fear that sustains this political regime. In an analogy to the traditional repertoire of Teatro Dom Roberto, various characters appear: some draw her closer to terror, others try to heed her cries of despair.

But there are those who defy the laws and conventions to restore Maria’s freedom.

Maria Liberdade is a glove puppet show in which, as with Teatro de Robertos, the puppets are manipulated by a single puppeteer, Manuel Costa Dias, who uses the traditional voice box to characterise the characters’ voices. The narrative is complemented by the voice and guitar of Nuno do Ó.

Maria Liberdade brings Dom Roberto with her.

Manuel Dias is one of the puppeteers who has been on the scene for a long time, who has made the “Robertos” theater his own in an extraordinary way and given it a very distinct, autonomous, and deeply engaged character—much like his own philosophy of life. There, Dom Roberto coexists with the figure of Salazar, reminding us that freedom is always under threat.

A live musical accompaniment fills the space with a rich tapestry of sound; we also witness the unfolding of a reflection on the world, society, and the pursuit of freedom. And above all, there is a fundamental element here: that there are people passionate about puppetry, deeply in love with their art, who continue and will always continue, for the true strength lies above all in a place called the heart.

Trulé – Investigação de Formas Animadas

Trulé – Research into Animated Forms made its debut at the 1st BIME in 1987 with a show by Robertos, and over the last 20 years has toured 24 countries, taking part in over 80 international festivals and winning 18 awards. Trulé, a professional project, aims to promote puppetry both through the staging of shows and through training initiatives.
